three installation

Three was developed for the site-specific exhibition "Auxiliary" at the FAB gallery in October 2006.

Three wooden boxes were hung from the 15-foot ceilings by heavy metal cable. The boxes housed a projector and a dvd player. The projectors cast images onto three large burlap "pillows" that housed speakers. The three videos consisted of the three backs of one woman standing motionless. The two outer projections had male hands overlaid and enlarges move over the image of the back in a "massage-like" manner while the center projection was left untouched and still. The speakers inside the pillows were connected to cd players that played a faint scratching noise mixed with a slow breathing.

My intention was to create a sense of growing unease. The audience is lured to the installation to understand its construction and enjoy its aesthetics - this simulates an attraction to another person. As they approach the area they are forced to look down at the glowing images cast on the pillows. Then the audio piques there attention further and they move closer. They feel comfortable in the space until they strain to hear what is suddenly realized to be scratching and slow breathing and thus changes the meaning of the construction and imagery.

It is a piece about the anxiety of proximity but the curiosity and need to attain it.
